The cartoon shows the village cricket ground at Little Twitten, with pavilion, sightscreen, benches, cows etc to background with a boxing match being held on the square and a small crowd of supporters cheering. Signed Sillince and dated 6th September in pencil to top corner. The cartoon measures 11"x15". Excellent image. Sold with a copy of the printed page taken from Punch. G
William Sillance was a regular contributor to Punch and other magazines from the mid 1930's and became art editor in 1937 and was best known as a war-time cartoon artist and retained that position until the early 1950's. He continued to contribute to Punch until his death in 1974. His work features in numerous public collections
