BUCK, Samuel and Nathaniel. Antiquities; or Venerable Remains of above four hundred Castles, Monasteries, Palaces, &c. &c. in England and Wales, with near one hundred views of Cities and chief Towns . London: printed by D. Bond ... and sold by Robert Sayer 1774. 3 volumes, vol.I-II 2° (455 x 277mm), vol.III oblong 2° (440 x 465mm). Mezzotint portrait of the authors by Richard Houston after Joseph Highmore from a smaller copy, additional engraved title by Charles Grignion after Henri Gravelot in vol.I only, double-page map by R. Sayer, 427 engraved views of country houses, castles and antiquities only (of 428, lacking plate 256 from vol.II), 5 folding (plate 297 torn in fold without loss), and 83 double-page perspective views of cities and towns (some creased, some with minor tears, mainly in fold occasionally affecting illustration, mostly without loss, a few repaired. Some leaves slightly spotted or browned.) Vol.I-II in contemporary tree calf, spines gilt in compartments with red and blue lettering pieces, vol.III in calf, rebacked with morocco gilt (all rubbed, recased, vol.III slightly worn). Generally a fine copy of this outstanding series of views of the 18th century, providing important witness to the architecture of England and Wales, and in some cases providing the only record of monuments since lost. The five plates of London and Westminster form a panorama of the north bank of the Thames, extending to some 12 feet in length, taken from drawings made in 1749. The work had taken Samuel and Nathaniel Buck several decades to complete from the 1720's before the industrial expansion of the late 18th century. The work was originally published by suscription between 1727 and 1740 in 17 parts with 24 plates each, before they were bought by Robert Sayer Lowndes I pp.303-304; Upcott I p.xxxiii. (3)
