BUFFON, Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de (1707-1799). Autograph letter signed to Monsieur de Maupertuis, Montbard, 16 July 1753, one page, 4to , integral address leaf, remains of seal (seal tear in blank upper edge of 2nd leaf).
BUFFON, Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de (1707-1799). Autograph letter signed to Monsieur de Maupertuis, Montbard, 16 July 1753, one page, 4to , integral address leaf, remains of seal (seal tear in blank upper edge of 2nd leaf). A cordial letter, having been unable to see Maupertuis on his departure [from Paris], asking him to send news of himself ('de me dire quelque chose de votre santé et de vous même'). He will be in Paris before 15 August, for three weeks, and would like to see Maupertuis and hopes that the distance between their districts will not prevent them from seeing one another more often than the last time; the letter concludes affectionately. Buffon writes from his birthplace, on the Côte d'Or. His great Histoire naturelle in 36 volumes was published from 1748-78. Pierre Maupertuis (1698-1759), famous for his discovery of the principle of 'least action', studied in Basle with Johann Bernoulli 'the Elder'. In 1740 Frederick the Great invited him to Berlin to set up an academy, and in 1746 he became its President. He remained there for eight years but returned to Paris in 1753 when his health collapsed.
