BURTON, Richard Francis and Leonard C. SMITHERS]. Priapeia or the Sportive Epigrams of divers Poets on Priapus: the Latin Text now for the first time Englished in Verse and Prose (the Metrical Version by "Outidanos") and Introduction, Notes Explanatory and Illustrative, and Excursus, by "Neaniskos." Cosmopoli: Printed by the Translators, 1890. 4 o. Engraved frontispiece, engraved head and tail-pieces, title-page in red and black. Contemporary half morocco (spine faded with light wear to ends). FIRST EDITION, second issue, number 432 of 500 copies Printed for Private Subscribers only. The entire Preface was reprinted for the second issue the same year and eliminated all reference to Burton. Although he dissociated himself from the book, his exchange of letters with Smithers shows that they both were fully involved with this and other similar translations. Burton and Smithers had planned four titles in this series but Burton died the year of publication of "Priapeia" and Smithers completed and published their translation of "Catallus" in 1894.
