Lot of 2, including lithograph cdv of General James Simons, and cdv of General Braxton Bragg. James Simons (1813-1879) was a General in the S.C. militia and Speaker of the State House of Representatives. Governor Pickens appointed him Brig. Genl. over all Infantry and Artillery on Morris Island. An appointment of a political rival resulted in Simons' resignation in July 1861. He had no further part in the war. [Ft. Moultrie, Palmetto Battalion; A Manual for Re-enactors and Living Historians, Ft. Moultrie & Ft. Sumter 150th Anniversary - http://claudesinclair.com/Fort-Sumter/Moultrie.pdf] The cdv of Braxton Bragg appears to be post-war, with Bragg in civilian clothing. Bragg graduated in 1837 from USMA, and served in Florida in the Indian Wars until 1843. He then served in Mexico earning brevets of captain, major and lt. col. He retired in 1856 and became a planter in Thibodeaux, LA, but in Feb. 1861 was put in command of the army of LA, then commissioned into the provisional army of the Confederacy. Serving primarily in southern departments, Bragg participated in the Battle of Shiloh, and shortly after took command of the Army of the Mississippi, in command of all forces between the Mississippi River and Atlanta (except for Kirby Smith's East Tennessee forces). Bragg planned a campaign into Kentucky, hoping to strike before Federal forces unde Buell were ready, hoping to drive U.S. forces north of the Ohio River. In early 1864 he was assigned duty at Richmond, saw some action in Wilmington and in the final operations against Sherman. After the surrender at Appomattox, he accompanied Jefferson Davis through South Carolina and into Georgia, where Davis was captured in May. Having lost all of his land in the war, Bragg became a civil engineer at New Orleans. Condition: Simons cdv with minor surface soil; Bragg missing a small corner.
