Title: Collection of 6 letters and 3 postcards signed by Philip Whalen to noted publisher/editor Donald M. Allen Author: Whalen, Philip Place: Santa Fe, NM Publisher: Date: 1984-87 Description: With: 6 letters (11x8½): five are autograph letters signed and one typed letter signed. Dated: 6/7/84 (2 pages on 1 sheet), 6/16/86 (2 pages), 7/28/86 (3 typed pages, signed in pencil with holograph corrections), 8/14/86 (2 pages), 9/24/86 (2 pages on 1 sheet with original mailing envelope), and 3/28/87 (one page). Letters discuss topics ranging from daily life in Santa Fe, health, weight concerns, efforts at publishing his “Two Novels” [You Didn’t Even Try & Imaginary Speeches] with Zephyr Press, his participation in various poetry readings and conferences with Anne Waldman, Gary Snyder, and others. In July 1986, he writes: “Allen G[insberg] has invited me to read & talk to his class at Brookyln College early in March 1987, and I’ll also appear at St. Mark’s Poetry Project.” Also, discusses the Naropa Institute and the purchase of a Zen Center on Potrero Hill (San Francisco). Letter dated June 7, 1984: “I still haven’t really cheered up since I heard about Brautigan. I feel old and useless.” And, “Ginsberg’s postcard from China makes me want to pack up and go there.” * And, 3 autographed postcards (two from 1985 and one from 1986), 3½x5½. In 1/23/86 postmarked card, Whalen writes: “Dear Don, Thanks for the checks & royalty record. At Four Seasons Foundation, he helped in publishing: Interviews (1980) by Edward Dorn, A Quick Graph: Collected Notes and Essays (1970) by Robert Creeley, etc. In 1997, he helped edit the Collected Prose of Charles Olson (University of California Press).
