COLOMBIA--Cartagena.] A fine group of 5 printed documents relating to the early history of the struggle for independence in Colombia, all printed in Cartagena, Colombia, in generally very fine condition. Medina's La Imprenta en Cartagena de Indias gives the year 1809 for the first printed matter in Cartagena, and details printings of the period of 1809 to 1820. None of the following 5 items are included in his work. Medina only describes one entry for 1816, of a religious theme, with no printers name. These 5 documents were printed by Ramon Leon del Pozo, who Medina does not list until 1817, the year in which Medina believed Leon del Pozo started. In the total of 33 works listed by Medina in Cartagena, from 1809 to 1820, there are only two prints from the shop of Leon del Pozo: one in 1817, related to the administration of an infantry batallion, and the other, a priest's testimony, of 1818.These five documents detail the activities of the Spanish troops against the insurgents. Cartagena de Indias was the first province of Colombia to declare, in 1811, its independence from Spain, and the insurgents were successful until 1815, and then they were cruelly suppressed in 1816. This year has been said to have brought in "...the terror regime...", such was the cruelty of the Spanish army against the leaders and troops promoting the Colombian independence. Comprising: Cartagena 15. de Mayo de 1816 . 39 April 30 1816. Broadside. 1 page. To Francisco Montalvo, Capitan General del Nuevo Reyno de Granada, from Donato Ruiz de Santa Cruz, claiming victories over the "Patriotas," (the insurgents), who "were able to escape." Cartagena 19. de Mayo de 1816 . 8 May 1816. Broadside. 1 page. Broadside. From Donato Ruiz de Santa Cruz to Francisco Montalvo, Capitan General del Nuevo Reyno de Granada, claiming "victory" over the "...insurgent enemy...," in the cities of Santa Fé, (now Bogotá), and Popayán. The insurgent leaders are Serbier and Cabal. Ruiz de Santa Cruz mentions he will be waiting for Serbier in the "town of Honda." This copy has on the verso a handwritten contemporary note, indicating that is to be sent to the Viceroy of Mexico. Viva el rey. Cartagena 20. de Mayo 1816 . Broadside. 1 page. Donato Ruiz de Santa Cruz, from the town of Honda (see preceding), announcing the defeat, "... after 5 years of slavery of the insurgents..." who have "...fled via Neyba..." A very lengthy text, in which Ruiz de Santa Cruz claims "total victory," in what is now Colombia. In fact, this year Spain again controlled most of the territory, until the final independence, December 19, 1819, 3 years later. Cartagena 2. de Junio de 1816 . Broadside. 1 page. Francisco de Montalvo, Gobernador y Capitán General de este Reyno, informs that Pablo Morillo, General en Gefe (sic) del Exercito, (sic) Expedicionario, has taken the capital, Santa Fé de Bogotá, and concludes that the rebels have fled, and that their leaders are being persecuted, etc. Morillo was extremely cruel with many of the heroes of Colombian independence. It took him 106 days to take Cartagena, and from there he climbed to Bogota, and the rest of the provinces. Only a handful of rebels remained, until the independence, in 1819, in the remote provinces of Casamare. Cartagena Junio 5. de 1816 . Broadside. 1 page. To the Governor and Capitan General del Reyno, from Lieutenant Colonel Julian Bayer, Commander of the Choco Division, announcing the defeat of the rebels in Quiddo, capital of the province. Names the captured insurgent leaders and the war equipment taken. ALL ARE VERY RARE. (5)
