Colton's General Atlas. New York: J. H. Colton and Company, 1859. Folio (448 x 378 mm). With engraved frontispiece and 96 mostly colored map sheets. Modern buckram. Map 15 and a few text leaves torn. J.H. Colton brought his two sons into the family publishing business in the 1850s, and his oldest son George Woolworth Colton was the primary engraver of this atlas, in which approximately half of the maps are devoted to the United States with state maps and city plans. Colton's steel plate engravings produced higher quality, more detailed prints than the wax engravings that were more commonly used at the time. Phillips Atlases 4342.
