CONGRESS] Journals of Congress. Containing the Proceedings ... Volume I [-XIII] . Philadelphia: R. Aitken [John Dunlap, David Claypoole], 1777-1788. Thirteen volumes (plus one additional copy of volume IX, see below), variously modern cloth (eight volumes) or original boards (five volumes). 8 x 4 3/4 inches (20 x 12 cm), with natural size variation, as most text blocks are uncut (one of the two copies of volume 9 is quite trimmed, the other very slightly so). Title pages with Bar Association stamp, some with accession dates etc. The volumes in original boards somewhat worn, most with small library labels to the foot of the spine, generally uncut copies (except volume XI), most with some of the usual toning to the paper but generally a very sound set. Volumes III, IV, VI and VII bear the name in ink of Henry Remsen Jr., (1762-1843), private secretary to Thomas Jefferson during Jefferson's presidency, and a noteworthy New York financier. A rare compilation, apparently entirely first printings, of the uniform edition of the Journals of Congress. On 26 September 1776, Congress had authorized Robert Aitken to reprint the two congressional journals that had appeared, in effect, as occasional publications "and to continue to print the same." With the loss of Aitken's press in the fall of Philadelphia, this responsibility devolved to John Dunlap and David Claypoole. The Journals contain all of the most critical documents from the Revolutionary period through the proposal of the Federal Constitution, including the text of the Declaration of Independence (with the names of the Signers), minutes of the debates at the Constitutional Convention, with the proposed text of the document. The set consists of the following: Volume I, Sept. 5, 1774 to Jan. 1 1776. Philadelphia: R. Aitken, 1777; Volume II, for the Year 1776. Philadelphia: R. Aitken 1777 (the rare issue with Aitken's imprint, one of a few known complete copies); Volume III, January 1, 1777 to January 1, 1778. Philadelphia: John Dunlap, [1778] (this is the rare first issue with the six leaves of the general index); Volume IV, January 1, 1778 to January 1, 1779. Philadelphia: David C. Claypoole, [1779]; Volume V, January 1, 1779 to January 1, 1780. Philadelphia: David C. Claypoole, [1780]; Volume VI, January 1, 1780 to January 1, 1781. Philadelphia: David C. Claypoole, [1781]; Volume VII, for the Year 1781. Philadelphia: David C. Claypoole, 1781 (index misnumbered VIII, as called for in the first issue); Vol. VIII, November 1782 to November 1783. Philadelphia: David C. Claypoole, 1783; Volume IX, November 1783 to June 1784 [with the rare addendum, with separate title, to August 1784] . Philadelphia: John Dunlap, [1784]; a second copy of volume 9, largely untrimmed, but without the addendum; Volume X, November 1784 to November 1785. Philadelphia: John Dunlap, 1785; Volume XI, November 1785 to November 1786. [Philadelphia:] John Dunlap, [1786] (title incorrectly read XII); Volume XII, November 1786 to November 1787. [Philadelphia:] Published by Order of the Congress, 1787; Volume XIII, November 1787 to November 1788. [Philadelphia:] John Dunlap, [1788]. All volumes contain the indices, and (where called for) all appendices appear to be present. Evans 15683; 15684; 16138; 16584; 17766; 17392; 17767; 18266; 18840 with 18441; 19316; 20068; 20772; 21526. C The New York City Bar Association
