Cornwall.- Execution.- Henry Rogers Pewterer of the County of Cornwall, engraved and etched portrait of him in gaol with his hands cuffed on laid paper, 316 x 196mm., mounted on board, trimmed within platemark, A. Groth, 1735. ⁂ Upon the death of his father the family farm at Skewis (between Camborne and Helston) was left to Henry's elder brother, and so he moved out to Helston where he became a pewterer. When his brother died he bequeathed the farm to his wife. This enraged Henry, who thought that the farm should stay in the family. And so, he forcibly took possession of it. The widow sued and won and the sheriff and his men were dispatched to evict Henry. He shot and killed two of these, a passer-by and another, whose body he refused to allow to be buried for some days. He then escaped but was apprehended at Salisbury en route to London having first killed another official. He was tried in Cornwall for just three murders in order to save time and was hanged 'without any remorse'.
