Title: Den Spaenschen ende Arragoenschen Spiegel. Author: ** Place: No place Publisher: Date: 1599 Description: 134 pp. With copper engraving on title-page, lightly hand-colored. (sm. 4to) 7½x6, old patterned wrappers. Rare Dutch pamplet on the persecution of Protestants in Westphalia. Notable, among other features, for the engraving on the title-page, which measures 3½x5½. It has three vignettes showing torture and mayhem in the top portion, below which is crowd of burghers, among whom are two Native Americans, unclothed but with feather headdresses, hands raised in celebratory fashion, one of the few depictions of Native Americans in 16th century works. Evidently, they were included in the crowd because they, too, were victims of Spanish tyrrany. The RLG Union catalogue lists only the copies in the University of Minnesota Library and the New York Public Library, both under "Dutch history pamplets. 1599:1." Lot Amendments Condition: Some darkening to paper, title-page a bit soiled with slight worming, else very good. Item number: 168451
