A restored 6.0 (C) sold for $465 in 11/19; a restored 0.5 (incomplete) sold for $110 in 3/20. Overstreet: "1st Cavalier." Bat-cyclopedia: "In November 1943, Batman and Robin meet the CAVALIER.... a gallant and courtly villain who speaks in flowery phrases and dresses in the colorful garb of a seventeenth-century musketeer.... The Cavalier sets in motion an elaborate scheme to gain possession of 'a collection of sports miniatures' — a set of relatively valueless silver trophy cups owned by former baseball pitcher Berry Berrigan. The Cavalier and his henchmen have just opened the safe in Berrigan's sporting goods store when they are surprised by Batman and ROBIN... but the Cavalier makes good his escape — albeit without the loot — by pinning Batman's cape to the wall with his plumed dart and riding to safety on a waiting motorcycle." — Michael L. Fleisher, The Encyclopedia of Comic Book Heroes Vol. 1: Batman. Macmillan: 1976, pp. 117, 175. Cavalier with Feet of Clay: "The Cavalier, who got his start in Detective Comics #81... was Mortimer Drake, a prominent playboy like Bruce Wayne who adopted the guise of a swashbuckling seventeenth-century swordsman and became a thief, seemingly out of sheer boredom. He looked like one more tribute to Douglas Fairbanks, but fans apparently considered him something of a lightweight, and he lasted only four stories. Still, he managed to get away from Batman in the first three of them and was caught only after he kidnapped a whale and held it for ransom. The Cavalier may have been killed in prison, since — unlike so many colleagues — he apparently never got out." — Les Daniels, Batman: The Complete History. Chronicle: 1999, p. 56. The DC UNIVERSE COLLECTION comprises over 40,000 comic books, including a copy of every single DC comic published for retail sale from 1934 to 2014. The collection was amassed by British music producer Ian Levine over the course of several decades, and it's been hailed as the single greatest collecting accomplishment in comic book history. This collection served as the basis for former DC Comics president Paul Levitz's monumental book 75 Years of DC Comics: The Art of Modern Mythmaking, published by Taschen in 2017. PBA is proud to present this epic collection in a series of themed sales over the next two years. To join the DC Universe Collection notifications list, contact pba@pbagalleries.com.
