(7 3/8 x 5¾ in.) image size; mounted to heavy card. Most of the photographs have a pencil notation at the bottom of the mount with a date. Two are "from daguerreotypes by Mayall (1855);" ten are by "C. Watkins, London (1858-1861);" six are by "Mason & Co., London (1865-67);" ten are by "Gurney, New York (1868)." Several have no notations at all and four photographs have a blindstamp embossed sh eld in the lower corner with the following information: "London/Stereoscopic @Copyright." Two of the photographs show evidence of a half tone screen indicating they have been rephotographed from a printed image. A remarkable collection of original photographs showing Dickens over a forty-year period. The photographs show Dickens in a variety of poses: seated at his desk, standing, seated in a chair. There are full length images, three-quarter poses and facial portraits. Included in the group are three photographs of a watercolor, a sketch and a painting--two show a young Dickens; one is a sketch dated 1870. (37)
