DRURY, Dru (1725-1803). Illustrations of Natural History; wherein are exhibited... figures of Exotic Insects . London: for the author, sold by B. White, 1770-1782 [but watermarked 1818] 3 volumes bound in one, 4° (287 x 230mm). English and French text, 150 hand-coloured engraved plates, most by and after Moses Harris 2 plates after M. Garlside by P. Mazell, many figures heightened with gum arabic, plates numbered, some dated 1767-1777, some watermarked. (Without one uncoloured plate called for by Nissen, occasional very light spotting or light browning, affecting title and a very few plates.) Early 19th-century dark green morocco panelled in gilt, gilt edges (some light rubbing to extremities). Provenance : Herbert Kynaston (1809-1878) (armorial bookplate) -- early 19th century bookseller's note, 'original and fine copy,/6' (pencil inscription to front endpaper). DRURY'S IMPORTANT WORK WITH FINE PLATES, presents over 240 insects, the majority previously unknown to the western world. A silversmith and naturalist, Drury nurtured his early love of insects, studying entomology and forming his own fine collection of specimens, advertising for exchange or purchase through foreign papers. His cabinets became well known, one cabinet alone with 11,000 insects, Donovan describing them as 'noble and very magnificent collections' (DNB). This copy appears to be a variant issue between the first edition of 1770-82 and the second published in 1837. An accomplished Classics scholar, Herbert Kynaston was High-master at St Paul's School, London, from 1838-1876. His bookplate suggests he owned this work whilst at Christ Church, Oxford.
