Bound without the final 6 pages of the 7-page publisher's catalogue at end of second volume; in their place are 12 ff., (pp. 61-84) from part 3 of the Second Edition of Volume 1 containing two chapters on captains Cook and Sharp not previously published. Three engraved maps [one a large folding "Description of the South Sea & Coasts of America" 375 x 246 mm sheet], 4 views, 4 portraits [of Rock Brasiliano, Batholomew Portugues, Sir Henry Morgan, Francis Lolonais], numerous woodcuts in text. (Marginal tears on E1 and Eee2, some occasional light browning at edges.) Contemporary calf (rebacked to match, corners repaired). Provenance : John Franklin (early signature on title and verso of last leaf in the first vol.); C. Cottrell Donner (signature on pastedown). FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH of this classic account of the pirates, then at the apogee of their power and menace. "The classic of buccaneering books" (Hill), first issued in Dutch in 1678. This translation was based on a Spanish edition of 1681. The appended volume contains Basil Ringrose's original account of the Pacific voyage of Bartholomew Sharpe. Sir Henry Morgan, one of the swashbuckling subjects, honored with a portrait and a view of his destruction of the Spanish fleet, sued the publisher for libel and won a judgment.
