Plan of the Operations of General Washington, against the King's Troops in New Jersey, from the 26th of December 1776, to the 3d January 1777.
London: Faden, 15 April 1777. Engraved folding map (305 x 405 mm). Disposition and movement of British and Hessian troops hand-colored in red. Condition : foxing extending into the image from the upper right margin. Provenance : Martin P. Snyder. the best plan of the battles of trenton and princeton, showing the crossing of the delaware by george washington and his “parade of troops.” Faden’s plan accurately depicts the two pronged American advance on the British and Hessian position at Trenton on December 26, as well as the ensuing Battle of Princeton. The former was preceded by Washington’s famous nighttime crossing of the Delaware. The American victories at those battles are seen as turning points in the war, as they breathed new life into the Continental Army following a string of defeats in the mid-Atlantic theater, while causing shock, dismay and signficant losses within the British and Hessian forces. “This map … was on sale in London ‘immediately’ after the action. It enables us to see the movements of the combatants just as a Londoner would have in April 1777” (Nebenzahl, Atlas of the American Revolution). first state . Nebenzahl, Atlas of the American Revolution 15; Nebenzahl, A Bibliography of Printed Plans of the American Revolution 119; Stevens and Tree 36a.
