Finn Juhl (b. Frederiksberg 1912, d. Ordrup 1989) “Fireplace Chair”. A teak easy chair. Seat, back and cushion upholstered with patinated natural leather. Model BO 59. Designed 1946. This example manufactured 1950–1960s by Bovirke. The “Fireplace” chair from Bovirke and the FJ 45 chair are probably for many the archetypical Finn Juhl armchairs and as such also some of the clearest expressions of Danish Modern and Postwar design in general. The “Fireplace” chair was based on the so-called “Westermann fireplace chair”, a model Finn Juhl presented at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers' Exhibition in 1944, but of which only few were made. The characteristic cross stretchers are one of the most elegant and graphic solutions to the basic problem of stability in a chair that we know within the realm of Danish Modern.
