FLOWN SPACE SHUTTLE COMPUTER]. Input/Output Processor [IOP] of the Shuttle Computer System. Approx. 10 in. wide, 8 in. tall, and 20 in. long with 7 data ports and two handles. ID tag reads in part: "MFG by IBM Corp. for Rockwell Int. Space Division, MC615-0001-0314, Contract No. NAS9-14000, Part No. 6247300-211, Serial No. 20, Model Type: Production, Date of MFG - 8/5/87." Flown on 6 Space Shuttle flights. The unit is from the first generation set of computers flown on the Space Shuttle. The six flights were STS-51J, 61B, 28, 33, 31, and 41, and actually on three different shuttle vehicles: Columbia, Discovery, and Atlantis. The interior of the unit has substantial gold plating. The Shuttle computer system is made up of 3 major components, the IOP, the central processing unit, and mass memory unit. The Shuttle's first generation computers had five systems, mainly for redundancy.
