Title: Fourteen original photographs of scenes and people in southeast India Author: Place: India Publisher: Date: c.1898 Description: Gelatin silver prints, some sepia tone. Images approx 10x15 cm (4x6") or reverse, on period card-stock mounts. A few captioned in the negative, most with pencil captions in the lower margins. Very nice selection of candid views of India in the days of British colonial rule, evidently assembled by Christian missionaries. One of the pictures is captioned in pencil "Madura Missionaries May 1898," a group of 31 men and women seated and standing. Most of the others are local scenes and native peoples, including: "An Evening Meal" - three men seated on the ground eating. "Women pounding paddy (rice)" - two women in sarongs working a very large mortar and pestle. "Road at Kodaikanal" - a European man and woman standing at the side of the tree-lined road. "Fishermen mending nets." "Starting down from the hills" - with a European woman seated in a sedan chair waiting for bearers to lift her and begin the trek. "A Christian family" - an Indian man, woman and four children seated in chairs. "Body prepared for burning." "Drinking the milk of a coconut." And more. Lot Amendments Condition: Some rubbing to edges of mounts, a bit of fading to some images, very good overall. Item number: 281795
