FREDERICK LILLYWHITE
FREDERICK LILLYWHITE The English Cricketers' Trip to Canada and the United States London: F. Lillywhite. 1860. 8°., wood-engraved frontispiece, additional title and 22 plates, folding map (some plates waterstained), original green ribbed cloth, gilt lettering on upper cover (recased), modern green buckram box with morocco label. Provenance : Thomas Baker (pencil inscription) -- Epworth's compliment slip. FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST TOUR BOOK. George Parr took his team to Canada and the United States in 1859, and this first international encounter was memorably described by Fred Lillywhite who accompanied the tour with his score-tent. As Rowland Bowen speculated, it might have been the start of a long series but for the intervention of the American Civil War (which broke out in 1861). Without years of war on the nearer continent, "our natural opponents at cricket would have been not Australia but the U.S.A. and possibly Canada" ( Cricket: A History , 1970, p. 97). Allen 78; Padwick 4893.
