George Parr took his team to Canada and the United States in 1859, and this first international encounter was memorably described by Fred Lillywhite who accompanied the tour with his score-tent. As Rowland Bowen speculated, it might have been the start of a long series but for the intervention of the American Civil War (which broke out in 1861). Without years of war on the nearer continent, "our natural opponents at cricket would have been not Australia but the U.S.A. and possibly Canada" ( Cricket: A History , 1970, p. 97).
