George I Gilt-Gesso Mirror In the manner of John Belchier circa 1725 The beveled rectangular mirror plate within a frame surmounted by a plumed crest carved with a seraph's head flanked by eagles' heads, the shaped apron carved with a shell and mounted with later brass candle arms. Height 41 inches (104.2 cm), width 20 1/2 inches (52 cm) . The eagles' heads are a characteristic of the cabinet-maker John Belchier whose premises were recorded at The Sun, on the south side of St. Paul's Church Yard in 1717 until his death in 1753 at the age of seventy. Belchier supplied a pair of large pier mirrors to John Meller at Erddig, Denbighshire, Wales, in 1724, with birds' heads to the crestings; see Adam Bowett, Early Georgian Furniture 1715-1740 , Woodbridge, 2009, pp. 280-281.
