George Romney British, 1734-1802 Girl with a Dog, Holding a Bonnet, with Cherries in Her Apron Oil on canvas 40 3/4 x 32 1/8 inches (103.5 x 81.5 cm) This portrait will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonne of the artist's paintings now in preparation by Alex Kidson of the Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art and soon to be published by Yale University Press. Once thought to represent Miss Alison Grimshaw, this lovely portrait of an unknown young girl is, in Kidson's words, "a characteristic early work of the period immediately before he [Romney] left Kendal for London (i.e. of circa 1761)." Frame rubbing. Glue relined, with some flattening of impasto. Some contours reinforced: girl's right cheek and forehead, shadows and neckline of her dress; the lower edges of the skirt and shoe. Inpainted craquelure on the face and the bodice of the dress, scattered touches on her left arm and on her bonnet. Repaired hole 1/4 inch across at the edge of her bonnet. Area 1 x 1/2 inches in the red hem of her skirt below the bonnet rim. Line of restoration 3 inches long 2 inches in from the left margin, probably to restore small losses from stretcher pressure. Scattered touches elsewhere.
