GRECO, Gioachino. The Royall Game of Chesse-Play, sometimes the recreation of the late King with many of the nobility, illustrated with almost an hundred gambits, being the study of Biochimo, London: for Henry Herringham, 1656. Small 8° (153 x 95mm.). Engraved portrait of Charles I, title with woodcut border, woodcut diagram on verso of B 7, headpieces and initials, with the final leaf "The Stationer to the Ingenious Chesse-Player". (Woodcut border to title cropped at lower edge, some very light mainly marginal staining and spotting.) 18th-century speckled calf, spine with red morocco lettering piece gilt (rebacked preserving old spine, rubbed and lightly scuffed). Provenance : ROBERT BLASS (ex-libris stamp on front free endpaper); ex lot 33 Christies South Kensington sale 8 May 1992 of the Robert Blass Library of Chess Books (sold for £950). FIRST EDITION.
