Hale & Emory's Marysville City Directory, August 1853. First Publication Author: Hale, Clarkson P. & Fred Emory Place: Marysville Publisher: Printed at the Marysville Herald Office Date: 1853 Description: [4] ad, 133pp. (pp.63-133 are advertisement pages printed on colored paper). 19.5x12.5 (7¾x5"), original leather-backed marbled boards, spine lettered in gilt. First Edition. Rare directory of the California gold rush town of Marysville, in Yuba County, the first separate directory of the town, according to Quebedeaux. Founded in 1850, Marysville was named for Mary Murphy Covillaud, a member of the Donner Party and wife of the foremost landowner of the region. Quebedeaux notes that it "quickly became a major trading center for the northern mines during the gold rush, and an important supply port at the confluence of the Feather and Yuba rivers... This directory, once thought to exist in only two copies, is one of the most famous for a gold rush community, with especially important advertisements." Eberstadt notes that "The rarity of the book is due, no doubt, to the series of fires and floods which alternately burnt and inundated the settlement during this period. Within a few months of its publication Marysville was swept by two fires involving a loss of nearly half a million dollars." OCLC/WorldCat lists nine copies. However, no copies have appeared at auction since at least 1975, per American Book Prices Current and Rare Book Hub. This copy with a large number of "Received" rubberstamps of the the Sheriff's Office, several of which are filled out by Sheriff Steve Howser, dated 1902, with his separate ownership signature in several places, a few noting M'Ville. There is a 1926 ownership inscription by Peter J. Delay, and the top corner of the front free endpaper is torn off. Cowan p170; Greenwood 394; Howes C632; Quebedeaux 125; Streeter 2741. Lot Amendments Condition: Boards rubbed, paper peeling off at corners; some minor aging within; very good overall. Item number: 318690
