with 68 caliber 54.35" round to octagonal barrel inlaid with brass cipher maker's mark on top and inlaid brass fleur-de-lis on left side, both in rectangular blocks, top of barrel with vining scroll engraving with inlaid brass leaves, standing front and engraved notch rear sights, unmarked flintlock, brass trigger guard with feathered terminals, brass butt plate with floral engraving, plain brass side plate, and 4 brass ramrod ferrules, full walnut stock with old steel rod, fine old patina, total length 61.2". Hannah Duston of Haverhill, Massachusetts was taken captive by Indians in March of 1697. While traveling to Canada with the other captives she killed ten of her captors in their sleep, took their scalps for bounty - as well as the above musket - eventually making her way back to Haverhill. Lot includes an 8vo illustrated booklet entitled Hannah Duston Heroine of 1697 Massacre of Indian Captors On River Islet at Boscawan, N.H., 1973 Evens Printing Co. PLUS a large framed manuscript cardstock museum label that reads in part The Duston Gun Hannah Duston of Haverhill, Mass. was taken captive by the Indians at Haverhill Mar. 15, 1698...with the scalps and gun she took a canoe and floated down the Merrimac to Haverhill. The Gun she brought home has been in my possession since 1856. It was given to me by Wm. Patten of Candia, N.H., a relative of Mrs. Duston...Wm. Clagston, 22" x 14", matted and framed, 19" x 27". AND a manuscript letter sheet on watermarked paper, ca last quarter of the 19th century detailing the chain of possession by a former owner, Wm. Clagston #95 Jefferson Ave. Springfield, Mass., framed 12" x 14.25". Condition: Stock, barrel and other trappings of the period, but lock a later (1790-1805) replacement. Butt plate broken, forearm of stock has old spliced in repair, other slight nicks on stock, VG-.
