The intimate friends of H.C. Andersen in his later years were Moritz Melchior, a wealthy banker, and especially his wife Dorothea Melchior (1823–85). H.C. Andersen spent part of the summer at their villa “Rolighed” (“Quietude”) where he had his own rooms. Most of the letters are mentioned in H.C. Andersen's diaries.
