Magazine, and Several Additional KURTZMAN Items Publisher: Warren [Indicia: General Promotions Co., Inc.] Date Published: 1959-1965 Description: Lot of 20 issues of HELP!, comprising #s: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 (vol. 2, #1), 14 (vol. 2, #2), 15 (vol. 2, #3), 17 (vol. 2, #5), 18 (vol. 2, #6), 19 (vol. 2, #7). 20 (vol. 2, #8), 21, 23, 24, 26. Lot also includes Harvey Kurtzman's Second HELP!-Ing Gold Medal paperback (1962), Comedy #1 (1980), with an article on Kurtzman's HELP!, and Comic Art #7 (2005), with an article about Kurtzman's post-Humbug freelance career. Generally VG or better, some outliers in better or slightly lesser condition. Harvey Kurtzman was on the ropes. He bailed on EC in 1956, full of high hopes for post-MAD success, only for his luck to abruptly nosedive. First Trump crapped out, then Humbug flopped. His son Peter was diagnosed with severe learning disabilities, and bills were piling up. Kurtzman was in dire need of HELP. "Each of the titles of Harvey Kurtzman's magazines say something about his state of mind at the time. MAD suggested creative anarchy, Trump signified arrogant domination, Humbug expressed bitternss and Help! shouted his career anxieties to the skies.... Help! was a hit-and-miss affair. Some of the material worked. Some fell flat.... The first sales reports were troubling. The first issue lost money.
