HOGG, Robert (1818-97) and Henry Graves BULL (1818-85). The Herefordshire Pomona, containing coloured figures and descriptions of the most esteemed kinds of apples and pears . Hereford: Jakeman and Carver, and London: Journal of Horticulture Office, 1876-1885. 2 volumes, 2 (366 x 280mm). Errata slip after first title. 77 chromolithographic plates by Alice Ellis, Edith Bull and W.G. Smith, printed by Severeyns of Brussels, 4 black and white plates depicting portraits of T.A. Knight and John 1st Lord Viscount Scudamore, and scenes of Knight's birthplace and the Cordon Pear Wall, text illustrations of cross-sections of fruit. (Very light spotting to 6 plates, very light browning at upper margin, a few pencil corrections to text and plates, small marginal tears in errata slip.) Contemporary green half morocco, spine gilt in compartments, gilt edges (slight scuffing). "One of the finest fruit books ever issued" ( Great Flower Books , p.59) and "virtually an encyclopaedia of apples and pears" (Raphael, An Oak Spring Pomona , 82). Nissen BBI 294. (2)
