Lot Description: Hollie Point: A Fine Linen Chemise or Shirt for a Baby , in a generous size, the shoulders inserted with fine panels of Hollie Point needle lace, also known as Holy Point from the days when it was put to liturgical use. Following this it featured in baby clothes or christening sets, made domestically by those ladies with access to the fine and expensive thread required, in the 18th and early 19th century. Designs varied. The lace is formed using buttonhole stitch, the pattern formed by missing stitches to leave holes. In this example each panel features a flower in pot centrally and a large flower head. The chemise is further notable for the extra detail, being scalloping to each side of the panels, and tiny hand stitching forming the under-arm seams and the shoulder gathers. Together with A Baby Bonnet with Hollie Point crown and rear back panel, these areas featuring the same scalloping to the sides of the needle lace (2) Condition Report: . A tiny pinprick in the linen here and there, but otherwise very good. ARR: Categories: Fans
