HOMER. The Whole Works of Homer, Prince of Poetts, in his Iliads and Odysses. Translated from the Greek by George Chapman (1559?-1634). London: [Richard Field and William Jaggard] for Nathaniel Butter, [1616?]. 2 works in one volume, 2° (280 x 176mm). Roman letter with some italic, 48 lines. Engraved architectural title by W. Hole portraying Achilles, Hector and the head of Homer, engraved portrait of Chapman on title verso, engraved plate to the memory of Prince Henry, etched title to the Odysses with full-length figure of Homer. With blank GG8 in the first work and blanks R8 and Ii8 in the second. Woodcut ornaments. (Title cropped with slight loss at outer margin and probably supplied from another copy, engraved title to the Odysses restored at lower margin, the Iliads without blank *1 and without the unsigned bifolium of sonnets after Gg8, the Odysses without blank A1 and the inserted printed title, Hh3r of the same work with small paper fault slightly affecting 2 lines, X5r rather soiled, occasional light soiling elsewhere.) Early 19th-century red morocco gilt, covers with wide dentelle border, gilt spine directly lettered in one compartment, gilt turn-ins and edges. Provenance : Raphe Hassall (signature on verso of memorial plate). FIRST ISSUE OF THE FIRST COLLECTED EDITION of Chapman's celebrated translation, a reissue of the editions of c. 1611 and c. 1615 in one volume with a general title, portrait of Chapman and memorial engraving to Prince Henry prefixed. The engraved general title is an alteration of Hole's previous title to the Iliads . STC 13624; cf. Grolier Langland to Wither 35-36; Pforzheimer 169-170.
