Fading remains Découpage sur bois, signé au dos et numéroté 29/30 Wood sculpture, signed and numbered 29/30 verso 61,5 x 48,5 cm - 24.2 x 19 in VHILS (Portugais, né en 1987) Alexandre Farto, connu sous le nom de VHILS, a grandi à Seixal, dans une banlieue de Lisbonne en pleine transformation. Il découvre le graffiti vers l'âge de 13 ans et l'utilise comme outil d'expression. C'est d'ailleurs par cette pratique que Vhils s'éveille à l'art et à tout son univers. Après avoir commencé des études de graphisme et d'animation 2D/3D, il quitte Lisbonne et déménage à Londres en 2007 pour étudier les Beaux-Arts au Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. En 2008, il obtient une reconnaissance internationale au Cans Festival de Londres organisé par Banksy..Une de ses oeuvres de sa série « Scratching the Surface » qui reproduit un portrait d'anonyme, est exposée à côté de celle de son prestigieux organisateur et sera reproduite à la une du Times. Artiste engagé, il pousse le concept du street art et du graffiti à son paroxysme. De ces arts de « murs », Vhils en tire l'essence et en détourne le sens. Il travaille dans la matière et sur la surface, en attaque les différentes couches de son support et inscrit son oeuvre dans une démarche pérenne et presque classique - là où Graffiti et Street Art oeuvrent à l'éphémère. En galerie, il laisse apparents aux pieds de son oeuvre gravats et résidus de murs, installant la rue en galerie et la fragilité dans son art pourtant massif. Il est représenté aujourd'hui par la galerie Lazarides à Londres, Vera Côrtes Agency à Lisbonne et la galerie Magda Danysz (Paris - Shanghai). Portuguese artist Alexandre Farto (1987) has been interacting visually with the urban environment under the name of Vhils since his days as a prolific graffiti writer in the early 2000s. His groundbreaking carving technique - which forms the basis of the Scratching the Surface series and was first presented to the public at the VSP group show in Lisbon in 2007 and at the Cans Festival in London in 2008 -, has been hailed as one of the most compelling approaches to art created in the street in the last decade. This striking form of visual poetry, showcased around the world in both indoor and outdoor settings, has been described as brutal and complex, yet imbued with a simplicity that speaks to the core of human emotions, expressing the struggle between the aspirations of the individual and the demanding, saturated environment of the urban spaces he lives in, highlighting and exposing the sombre dimension that lies behind the current model of development and the material aspirations it encompasses - unsustainable, yet inebriating. Vhils grew up in Seixal, an industrialised suburb across the river from Lisbon, the capital of Portugal and was particularly influenced by the transformations brought on by the intensive urban development the country underwent in the 1980s and 1990s. An avid experimentalist, he has been developing his notion of the aesthetics of vandalism in a plurality of media - from stencil painting to wall carving, from pyrotechnic explosions to 3D modelling - which have enabled him to expand the boundaries of visual expression.
