Laid in: Autograph letter signed from Hughes to a Mr. Cavell, Chester, 20 April 1888, 1 1/4 pages, 8vo, integral blank leaf , on business matters. E. Hubert Litchfield bookplate; The Scouring of the White Horse, 1859, red morocco gilt, g.e., original blue cloth gilt covers, including spine, bound in, by Root , illustrations by Richard Doyle half-title, 16-pp. publisher's catalogue at end dated 1858. Tipped in: Autograph letter signed from Hughes to "Dear Akerman," Cromer, Norfolk, 5 October 1857, 3 pages, large 8vo, folded over at bottom and fore-edges, a blank corner chipped, a slight fold tear , a fine literary letter entirely about the writing of The Scouring of the White Horse (Akerman apparently contributed ballads and humor to the work): "...Atkins & all the fold down there would I know like very much to get a little book about it, half official & historical, & the rest (to carry it off) any measure of fun & nonsense we can run together. I have begun it, the title might be 'The Scouring of the White Horse 1857'...we can weave in your ballads & any old bits of country songs...I have done a couple of chapters..."; Tom Brown at Oxford, 1861, 3 vols., original blue cloth, extremities rubbed, endpapers cracked at two inner hinges, blue half morocco slipcase.
