HUNT, WILLIAM HOLMAN. Illustrated autograph letter signed ("W. Holman Hunt") to the artist Michael Halliday ("My deak Mike"), n.p., 12 August 1865. 2 pages, 8vo, a few tiny fold holes, the top half of the first page containing A FINE PEN-AND-INK PORTRAIT DRAWING OF HIS FUTURE WIFE FANNY WAUGH ( the drawing, approx. 70 x 50mm., 2 3/4 x 2in., showing Miss Waugh's left profile ). "I HAVE GOT MY QUEEN" "My pen isn't a very good one, and my paper will not bear being scratched so I must be content with the sketch above to convey to you some idea of the lady whom the bountiful Gods have sent to me for a wife...The lady is Miss Waugh -- the dear sister of Mrs. [Thomas] Woolner. I have known her some six or seven years. Her father is a chemist in Regent St....he is as fine and true a gentleman as I ever met -- and the daughter, you shall say, is one of the truest and noblest ladies you ever saw..." Fanny Waugh was a great-aunt of Evelyn Waugh (who wrote about and was always intensely interested in the Pre-Raphaelites); after her untimely death, Hunt married her younger sister Edith. The artist Michael Halliday shared a studio for a time with Holman Hunt (see Christopher Woods, The Dictionary of Victorian Painters , p. 198). Interestingly, his best known painting is "The Measure for the Wedding Ring" (1855), at one time in the collection of Evelyn Waugh.
