HUNTER, JOHN. An Historical Journal of the Transactions at Port Jackson and Norfolk Island, with the discoveries which have been made in New South wales and in the Southern Ocean, since the publication of Phillip's Voyage. London: J. Stockdale 1793. 4to, old blindstamped calf, rebacked, covers detached, worn, imprint cropped from title, portrait and title browned, plan of Norfolk Island cropped at fore-edge, single tears to each of the folding maps, some soiling. FIRST EDITION, engraved title with vignette, engraved portrait of Hunter by D. Orme after R. Dighton. 10 engraved plates, 5 maps (2 folding). Hill, p. 151; Ferguson 152. Hunter was second in command to Governor Phillip on the First Fleet voyage, commanding the Sirius . He later became the second Governor of New South Wales (1795-1801). The view of Sydney is one of the earliest engravings of the settlement.
