Beschreibung:

CARLOS IV, KING OF SPAIN. 1788-1808. Carta executoria of King Carlos IV of Spain. Badajoz (?): 1796.
Manuscript on vellum, in Spanish, 295 x 190 mm. 13 unnumbered leaves; collation uncertain owing to tight binding. 24 long lines written in italic script surrounded by a frame in gold ink, written area: 215 x 130 mm. Four section headings introduced by illuminated initials, each opposite four lines of text in display capitals. Three full-page miniatures, each preceded by a pink silk curtain. F. 1r: St. Michael above on a cloud above, having slain a person rather than a dragon; below at left, the Archangel Raphael with attributes of a staff and a fish; below at right, a Franciscan saint; below at center a youth in 18th century dress, holding a pile of books and a scroll with the inscription "No. 8892. 1/18 @. ancho." F. 2r: an achievement of arms. F.3r: stamped ink seal of Carlos IV, surrounded by elaborate border including two women with martial attributes and a banderole with the inscription "La virtud y el merito constitua la noblezza." Eighteenth-century binding of red morocco gilt over pasteboards, blue silk doublures, red wax seal in silver capsule suspended on a multi-colored silk cord, pull-off case of brown tree calf.
Patent of nobility granted to Don Vicente Juan Gozalbes, described as resident in the city of Alcoy in the Kingdom of Valencia. With notarial attestations on the final two folios. F. 12 is possibly a contemporary leaf from another source, as it is larger than the text block and has the edges folded in. The two lines at the top naming as the place of issue Badajoz—on the far side of Spain from Valencia—appear to be a replacement text in a similar style of script. However, a text at the foot of f. 12r confirms that the document is a grant of nobility to Don Vicente Juan Gozalbes of Alcoy in the kingdom of Valencia and to his descendants in the direct male line.
