[Handed over by a Japanese Captain when he surrendered his vessel in 1945.] A white linen Japanese submarine flag, with machine sewn cut in pieces, comprising a central red star, and 4 sea blue wave effects, the hoist arranged to take a wooden pole, so the flag can be flown. 510 x 860 mm. (20 x 33.5 inches.) A rare survival of a Japanese submarine flag, principally because the Japanese had relatively low numbers of submarines, some 174, of which 75% were sunk. In comparison with US submarine flags which include small suns to show the number of kills they had, this Japanese flag is somewhat plain. It is believed this submarine was operating in the Malaysia area, when she surrendered.
