INDIA] LUARD, JOHN, (MAJOR). Views in India, Saint Helena and Car Nicobar drawn from Nature and on Stone by... [London: ... ... [London: circa 1832-38]. Modern half morocco, marbled sides, all edges gilt. 13 3/4 x 10 inches (35 x 25 cm); frontispiece plate, lithographic title, dedication, preface, and 59 plates (with accompanying texts), most mounted india proofs (i.e. 60 plates with frontis., as called for). Scattered foxing, mostly to mounts. The plates were printed by J. Graf or Seret and C. Hullmandel. This is an interesting series of views (quite rare complete), with much incidental information on military life in India, as well as local customs etc. Luard retired in 1834 as a major, and was breveted lieutenant colonel in 1838 (the earlier plates give his rank as captain in the imprint, the later as major). Provenance: Woodward Gardens was a 19th-century San Francisco amusement park, from 1866 to 1891. Woodward was a collector of curiosities, and this may have numbered among them. C
