An account of some of the Bloody Deeds of General Jackson.
Np, 1828. Large broadside with wide margins and deckle edges (27 x 20 ¾ inches, 680x530 mm). Illustrated with three woodcut vignettes and a woodcut coffin, text within black mourning borders. Condition: Some foxing and toning, very minor staining in the top margin, minor creases, a few minor tears and separations. Overall, in remarkable condition given its age and size. scarce and mammoth version of one of the most famous political broadsides in electoral history. This coffin broadside was issued during the contentious election of 1828 between incumbent John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson The broadside contains an incredible amount of anti-Jackson text, divided into many sections by mourning borders. It is one of several versions of the broadside [see the following lot] with similar and at times identical text, but typographically different. It has been suggested, that these similarities are evidence of a coordinated smear campaign against Jackson. The first vignette, referring to the execution of militia men during the Creek War, depicts six men wearing blindfolds kneeling in front of a row of open coffins with a rifle squad and an officer holding a sword yelling “fire.” The text surrounding the vignette on three sides is headed with the sub-title “A brief Account of the Execution of the Six Militia Men.” The second vignette similarly depicts a single man about to be executed, above whose head is the quote “O God!! My poor mother” with a caricature of Jackson standing behind the riflemen saying “Blow ten balls thru the d__d rascal.” This refers to John Woods and the text below the vignette describes the murder. The third vignette, referring to a duel between Jackson and Charles Dickinson, shows the same caricature of Jackson saying “I'll have your heart's blood” and shooting an unarmed man with a pistol. OCLC locates only the New York Historical Society and Duke University copies of this broadside.
