JEAN BAPTISTE AUDEBERT (1759-1800) Histoire Naturelle des Singes et Makis. Paris: Desray, [1798-1799] An VIII. 2° (500 x 325mm). Half-title, 1p. subscribers list. 63 plates, 61 printed in colours and finished by hand by the author, 2 uncoloured anatomical plates. (Some spotting to about 10 plates and some text leaves, small marginal tears to the 1st, 4th, 5th, 8th and 11th plates, marginal tears to about ten text leaves.) Contemporary half calf, the flat spine with red morocco lettering-piece (spine and extremities rubbed, foot of spine lacking). Provenance : H. Calkoen, ?Amsterdam (early armorial bookplate, with manuscript sugnature in ink); Six van Hillegom (armorial bookplate). A GOOD UNSOPISTICATED COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION of the greatest early illustrated monograph on monkeys. It was Audebert's first individual publication, and he here employed his colour-printing process for the first time. Nissen ZBI 156, Wood 206.
