Bartlett’s enameled steel plates from the 1970s are considered some of the artist’s most original and important works. Her visual shorthand of colored dots and grids employed to render abstracted landscapes that straddle the line between Minimalism and Conceptualism caused a huge stir in the 1970s New York art scene and remain her most inventive works. These early enamels very rarely appear at auction. Jennifer Bartlett (b. 1941) The artist born in California studied at Mills College in Oakland until 1963 and then at Yale University School of Art and Architecture in New Haven, where she got her Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1964, and her Master's degree in 1965. Influenced by Sol LeWitt she worked strictly geometric first, but turned in the course of her long career to her environment as image subject. She explores systematically the color and shape possibilities of the painterly depiction. Often she creates space-filling installations. As a painting surface for her paintings serve steel, wood or canvas. Jennifer Bartlett's work are shown since the early 1980s in solo and group exhibitions in major international museums.
