Beschreibung:

Property of a Private Collector JOHANN GOTTFRIED STEFFAN Wädenswil 1815 - 1905 Munich A MOUNTAINOUS LANDSCAPE WITH A WATERFALL singled and dated lower right: J. G. Steffan 1871 München oil on canvas, unlined canvas: 22¼ by 16 in.; 56.5 by 40.6 cm. framed: 28 by 22 in.; 71.1 by 55.9 cm.Condition ReportThe following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com , an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This painting is unlined and although the canvas is quite wavy in the upper portion, hopefully it can remain unlined. A vertical scratch or possibly a slight tear has occurred in the center right. The picture has most likely never been properly cleaned. Under ultraviolet light there are some restorations visible here and there in the darker colors which presumably address some fine cracking, blooming to the varnish or abrasion, although it seems unlikely. It would be advisable to clean the picture to ascertain the reason for this retouching, which may be misguided. Despite the fact that there are retouches, the condition of the painting is good and we would encourage a reexamination of the restoration. The lot is sold in the condition it is in at the time of sale. The condition report is provided to assist you with assessing the condition of the lot and is for guidance only. Any reference to condition in the condition report for the lot does not amount to a full of condition. The images of the lot form part of the condition report for the lot provided by Sotheby's. Certain images of the lot provided online may not accurately reflect the actual condition of the lot. In particular, the online images may represent colours and shades which are different to the lot's actual colour and shades. The condition report for the lot may make reference to particular imperfections of the lot but you should note that the lot may have other faults not expressly referred to in the condition report for the lot or shown in the online images of the lot. The condition report may not refer to all faults, restoration, alteration or adaptation because Sotheby's is not a professional conservator or restorer but rather the condition report is a statement of opinion genuinely held by Sotheby's. For that reason, Sotheby's condition report is not an alternative to taking your own professional advice regarding the condition of the lot.
