Joseph Hillier (British, b. 1974) Digital Rendition 3 Stainless Steel; unique 260cm high, 71cm wide, 65cm deep On view at: The Sculpture Park Hillier was born in Cornwall, and studied at Falmouth College of Art and Newcastle University before travelling to the United States on a scholarship to Tulane University, completing a Master of Fine Arts. He would return to both Newcastle and Tulane for research and teaching posts. Hillier was awarded several honours and awards, including the Year of the Artist Award in 2000 from the Arts Council of England.He was also elected associate member of the Royal British Society of Sculptors in 2004. Later, in 2013, he was selected as a finalist in the national sculpture prize, at Broomhill, for which the present lot was the nominated piece, and for the summer exhibition at the Royal Academy. Since his first solo show in London at APT Gallery in 2005, he has exhibited at the Glasgow International (where his work Dumb was identified as a highlight), had a solo exhibition at the Economist Plaza with the Contemporary Art Society, and has shown with Myles Meehan Gallery in Darlington. Seventeen of Hilliers large-scale installations are currently on permanent display nationally and internationally. The largest of these, In Our Image (2009), stands at 16.7m tall in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham and has received considerable international press interest.Most recently, in March 2019, a monumental work of Hilliers was unveiled by Theatre Royal Plymouth, which is currently Britains largest ever bronze sculpture. The human body, often viewed through the lens of science and technology, is a central theme for Hillier. Through the accretion of many individual parts, Hilliers work constructs the body as a timeless structure. The artist lives and works in the countryside near Newcastle, where he has built a studio.
