A fine and rare United States Presidential presentation 18K gold key wind full hunter pocket watchDate: Circa 1850 Movement: Nickel finish typical Jules Jürgenson wheel layout, pivoted detent escapement, cut bi-metallic compensation balance with gold screws, gold capped and jewelled end stones to escape wheel, elongated precision regulator, No.8888 Dial: White, black Roman numerals, black outer minute track, large subsidiary seconds at 6, blued steel spade hands Case: Polished round hinged, presentation engraving to cuvette, No.16231, 8888 Signed: Dial & movement, case stamped JAD Size: 54mm FootnotesIn the 19th century it was popular for the President of the United States to award foreigners in recognition of saving American lives however it was not until 1862, during the Presidency of Abraham Lincoln, that there became an official award. The present watch pre-dates this creation of an official award to non citizens of the United States and was made by the renowned watchmaker Jules Jürgenson. Upon the cuvette of the watch it is inscribed: The President of the UNITED STATES to Henry J Hart Master of the British ship Achilles for humanity to shipwrecked American Seamen 1859 On the morning of the 20th February 1859, the American Steamer Black Warrior ran aground on Rockaway bar while trying to enter New York harbour. With the aid of the vessels Screamer, Achilles and Edwin Blount, the passengers, crew and cargo of the Black Warrior were safely brought ashore. Four days later after numerous efforts to recover the steamer, the Black Warrior succumbed to the elements and was pummelled to pieces. In its heyday the Black Warrior is recorded as carrying mail, passengers and cargo predominantly between New York, New Orleans and Havana, Cuba. Nowadays the Black Warrior is one of the most dived upon shipwrecks near New York with numerous of her original features, including the wooden paddlewheels, still visible. Later watches gifted in recognition of saving American lives at sea were supplied by Waltham.
