Title: Letters from the Cardinal Borgia, and the Cardinal of York. MDCCXCIX-MDCCC Author: Borgia, Stefano Place: [London] Publisher: [W. Bulmer] Date: [1800] Description: 14 pp. With 3 facsimiles. Addressed to, and edited by, Sir John Coxe Hippisley. (4to) 29x23 cm (11½x9") light blue boards with tooled borders. Inscription from the compiler to the Duke of Marlborough on blank page opposite the title. Cesare Borgia, Duke of Valentinois, was a Spanish/Italian condottiero, nobleman, politician, and cardinal, whose fight for power was a major inspiration for The Prince by Machiavelli. Sir John Coxe Hippisley, 1st Baronet, was a British diplomat and politician who pursued an 'unflagging, though wholly unsuccessful, quest for office' which led King George III to describe him as 'that busy man' and 'the grand intriguer'. Lot Amendments Condition: Some wear and staining to boards, rubbing to extremities; bookplate and stamp from San Francisco's Sutro Library on front pastedown, toning, foxing to facsimile pages; very good. Lots sold without reserve are sold “as Is” and are not returnable under any circumstances.
