Lot of 2. Cabinet card featuring two men standing atop Lookout Mountain in Tennessee, credited on mount to Karns, Cardington, OH. Photographic enlargement, 7.5 x 9.5, framed to 9.125 x 11.125 in., featuring the same two men atop Lookout Mountain. Ink inscription on accompanying card (and crudely etched into frame verso) identify one of the men as Simon Welch (right), a native of Cardington, OH. Simon Welch completed three years' service in Company I, 3rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment, enlisting in June of 1861 and mustering out in June of 1864. The regiment saw action mostly in the western theater, participating in the Tullahoma and Kentucky Campaigns and Battles of Perryville and Stones River in 1862. The regiment participated in Streight's Raid to Rome, Georgia the following year, with most of its men being captured there and sent to Belle Island and Libby Prison that summer. After being exchanged and reorganized in Columbus, Ohio, the regiment spent the remainder of the year dispersing draft resistance in Holmes County, Ohio, performing guard duty in Bridgeport, Alabama, participating in the expedition against Nathan Bedfort Forrest, and performing garrison duty in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The regiment mustered out of service in June of 1864. Condition: Both photographs with heavy toning and wear including discoloration. Cabinet card with surface soil including pink colored ink dots to right side, and two pinholes to top edge. Frames in poor condition.
