Sadakichi Hartmann, in full Carl Sadakichi Hartmann, was born on November 8, 1867, in Nagasaki, Japan and died on November 21, 1944, in St. Petersburg, Florida. American art critic, novelist, poet, and man of letters. Hartmann was the son of a German father and Japanese mother. As a young man Hartmann became acquainted with many of the major artistic and literary figures in Europe and the United States. A writer for Boston and New York City newspapers in the 1880s and ’90s, Hartmann started the Art Critic in 1893, and became a follower of the photographer Alfred Stieglitz His articles appeared regularly in Camera Work, Stieglitz’s revolutionary magazine, where Hartmann wrote about photography with the same zeal he brought to his essays about art. Double Exposure: Early Stereographic Views of Historic Monmouth County, New Jersey and Their Relationship to Pioneer Photography. Historical survey of 19th century stereoviews of people and places in Monmouth County, New Jersey, and the photographers who produced them.
