Inventé, dessiné et dirigé par J.M. Weis. Paris: imprimé par Laurent Aubert, [1745]. Large 2 o (630 x 470 mm). Engraved throughout. Title within a cartouche by M.Marvie after Le Parmentier, equestrian portrait of Louis XV engraved by J.G. Will after C. Parrocel, J. Chevallier, and J.B. le Moine, 11 double-page views engraved by J.P.Le Bas after Weis, 20 pages of descriptive text within decorative borders and including vignette head- and tailpieces by Marvie after Weis (very light marginal darkening). Binding: The original presentation binding by Antoine-Michel Padeloup "le Jeune," signed with his engraved ticket at bottom of the engraved title page, red morocco gilt, covers with an elaborate broad border composed of 20 impressions of 4 large, specially designed plaques, displaying foliage azured and outlined tools incorporating the Royal cipher "LL" along sides and the arms of Nicolas-Rene Berryer (Olivier 296) at each corner, in centers the very large arms of Louis XV (Olivier 2495, fer 10), spine in 10 compartments, gilt lettered in second in the others Royal cipher, surrounded by small tools and fleurs-de-lys in corners, gilt edges (minor rubbing to spine ends and raised bands). Provenance: Nicolas-Rene Berryer (binding and bookplate "Bibliotheca Lamoniana"); Lucius Wilmerding (bookplate); Cornelius J. Hauck (bookplate; his sale Christie's New York, 27 June 2006, lot 438). A MAGNIFICENT COPY of the famous Fête Book, in the original presentation binding specially designed and executed by Padeloup. The binding forms a stylistic entity with the book. The work is a record of the festivities given by the city of Strassbourg to celebrate the visit of Louis XV, and also his recovery from a dangerous illness contracted at Metz in 1744.
