Ethiopic alphabet, folding genealogical table, and 8 folding plates (some minor, mostly marginal dampstaining, a few minor tears along gutter). (Some spotting and staining, small hole on 2M1 affecting a few letters.) 20th-century library cloth, gilt-lettered on spine. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH of Ludolf's Historica Aethiopica . Hiob Ludolf was a German-born scholar who became aquainted with Ethiopian language and culture through a monk from the Amhara province named Gregorius, whom he met while studying in Rome. This history, along with Ludolf's dictionaries and grammars of the Ethiopic language, were the principal resources for the study of the region for centuries of scholars. Wing L-3468.
