MACHIAVELLI, NICCOLO Tutte le opere di Nicolo Machiavelli cittadino et secretario fiorentino, divise in V. parti, et di nuovo con somma accuratezza ristampate . N.p (but Geneva): 1550 (but later, likely 1640s). Second or third (?) Testina edition. 18th century brown calf gilt, all edges gilt. 8 x 6 1/4 inches (20.5 x 16 cm); collating *^(2) a^(4), A-2X^(4) **^(2) a-o^(4) p^(2) a^(4) e^(4) a-2p^(4) 3a-3x, 4a-4x^(4) 4y^(2) (but lacking 4y2, terminal blank); with the woodcut of Machiavelli on the title and the fine double-page military woodcut at 3q2v and 3q3r, with the typographical tables. Neatly rebacked, binding scuffed and corners worn, Bar Association stamp on title verso, generally a clean copy internally. The Testina ("little head") editions of Machiavelli, so-called because of the engraving of the author's bust on the title, use a false date, that of the original date of publication, as Machiavelli's Opere was placed on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum in 1559.
