TWO PRESIDENTS AND A MILITARY HERO are brought together in this impressive, four-language ship's passport, printed in four-columns (English, French, Spanish and Dutch). President Madison and Secretary of State Monroe authorize the schooner Mariner , under captain George Macy, to pass from Boston to Bayonne, France, with its 83-ton cargo of fish. These documents were signed in blank in advance, and transmitted to the various port cities to be used as needed. At the time the Mariner sailed out, Dearborn was in the field, where he led troops in action against the British at Montreal, Kingston, Fort Niagara and Detroit. Dearborn had served as Jefferson's secretary of war. During the Revolutionary War he fought at Bunker Hill, Ticonderoga, Quebec, and was with Washington at Valley Forge. He later fought at Monmouth and had the satisfaction to be present at Yorktown when Cornwallis surrendered.
